In writing this blog post, I want to look forward into what can be done in 2018 that will help you become a better writer. I have been a working writer for over 10 years, and I have learned a lot about what it takes to improve as a writer. One of the biggest things that I believe all writers struggle with is the ability to be consistent. As a full-time writer, I know that there are times when I can be productive, and there are other times where I am not as efficient. There is always going to be those days when no matter how much you want to work on your writing, you just cannot find the time or motivation to sit down and do it. In those moments, all you can do is think about your writing and try to push through until you get into a groove. We all have those moments, but what you can do to overcome them is to set up systems that help you be more productive. I am not talking about minutes of the day, but rather ways that will make you do your writing instead of thinking about writing. Here are some tips for becoming a better writer in 2018. 1) Write for at least 30-60 minutes every day. Write even if you don’t want to or don’t feel like it. Set a timer and do it every day without fail. Even if I was doing tons of work on my book, I would still write for at least an hour every day...no matter what else needed to be done. This not only helps you to get into the writing habit, but it also lets you know what kind of writer you are. By seeing how much you actually produce each day, it will help you to see your progress on your novel/screenplay/script over time. 2) Always have a word count that you are aiming for when you write. My goal is 1500 words per day...which may not be a lot for some writers, but if I am going to make a living as a writer, I need to be able to write at least that many words every day. If I am going for a longer session of writing (3-5 hours or more), then my goal is 3000-4000 words per day. When I am not able to reach my goal, I make a note of how far behind I got and try to fix the problems that were holding me back. By writing consistently over time, you can see your overall word count go up which helps you to get better at writing longer pieces. 3) Always have a book that you are working on…even if it is just a short story or novella. Set a deadline for it and work on it every day until you reach the deadline. This will help keep your focus on writing instead of trying to figure out what to write next…or what project you should be working on. 8eeb4e9f32 34
